Goals

The main goal of this course is the improvement and development of listening and speaking skills in teacher-trainees at Universidad del Valle. Other materials will be electronic and when possible they will be available in the table distribution of contents in the page for course calendar.

Other materials will be videos and audio resources.

Methodology

In class, we will listen and discuss different texts according to the genre. For some materials, we will do traditional listening exercises, followed by discussions and production centered on the content of the texts. In some cases some readings providing background and a framework for the discussions will be introduced (mostly assigned before class). Independent work outside the class will be encouraged.

During the semester, we will watch  two movies. The selection of the movie will be done in class and negotiated with the students. The movies have to be

1. The biography of an important personality in the culture or history of an English-speaking country

or

2. A film adaptation of a novel that is considered representative of the literature of an English-speaking country.

Whether the movies are old or new, the stars are popular or not, and other criteria will not be considered relevant. Usually, we will watch 20 to 30 minutes of the film on Friday classes and discuss them.
